10 Common CV Mistakes in Tanzania (and How to Fix Them)

If your CV is being ignored, it is almost certainly one of these 10 mistakes. Fix them, and you will see a real difference in callback rates.

1. CV is too long

Most Tanzanian recruiters spend less than 30 seconds on a first scan. Keep your CV to one or two pages. Cut anything that does not directly support the role you are applying for.

2. Sending a Word document instead of a PDF

Word documents reformat differently on each computer. Always send a PDF — it preserves your layout and looks professional.

3. Generic objective statements

Vague phrases like "seeking a challenging position" add no value. Replace with a specific 2–3 sentence summary tied to the role.

4. No quantified achievements

Saying "Worked in sales" is weak. Saying "Grew weekly sales by 28% over six months" is strong. Use numbers wherever you can.

5. Including personal information you should leave out

Do not include date of birth, marital status, religion, NIDA number or a photo — unless the employer specifically asks.

6. Spelling and grammar errors

Even one typo can disqualify you. Read it out loud, run a spell-check, and have someone else proofread.

7. Unprofessional email address

Use a simple, professional email — firstname.lastname@gmail.com works. Avoid nicknames and joke handles.

8. Inconsistent formatting

Mixed fonts, sizes, bullet styles and spacing make a CV look careless. Stick to one font family and consistent spacing throughout.

9. No tailoring per application

Sending the same CV to every job hurts your chances. Adjust your summary and highlighted skills to match each role.

10. Wrong or outdated contact details

Double-check your phone number and email. A missing or wrong number means the employer cannot call you for an interview.
